Current Environment
Open up any social media site and you’ll quickly see unflattering videos of officers attempting to subdue violent offenders. The videos are shown out of context yet can nonetheless encourage costly Excessive Use of Force lawsuits.
In this litigation-intensive environment, it’s imperative that law enforcement officers display the utmost situational awareness as they bring suspects into custody. They must specifically avoid actions that can be construed to be abusive, such as choke holds or strikes to the face, and employ the minimum level of force necessary for the situation. The problem is that officers rarely receive training in this area.
About Us
At Tactical Judo Solutions, our specialty is empty hand control and self-defense training. We approach suspect interactions using Judo—which translates into English as “The Gentle Way”—to address common or even surprise situations with soft techniques, such as joint locks, holds, and grabs. The bottom line for your department is that documented training in these proven techniques can help mitigate your legal liability.
We’ve put together a curriculum that will help officers comply with their department’s Use-of-Force Continuum. Our introductory “Empty-Hand Control and Self-Defense Techniques for Law Enforcement” course has been approved for this purpose by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Program (POST) and will contribute four hours towards annual Continuing Law Enforcement Education (CLEE) training requirements.
Let Tactical Judo Solutions be your provider of choice for continuing education!
We have specifically designed this course to teach your officers Judo-based alternatives to striking.
We’ll start with a one-hour classroom session where we discuss the legal ramifications of strikes or choke holds, which are currently the subject of intensely negative media scrutiny and often the basis for costly Excessive Use of Force lawsuits. We’ll detail the principles of Judo and ways that these techniques are more effective than traditional striking.
We'll then focus on the basics for any physical encounter hands-on for the next three hours. We’ll teach your officers the fundamentals of falling without injury and then build upon that foundation as we delve into a spectrum of moves to recover from surprise attacks, including escapes, arm grabs, and wrist control. Your officers will practice these moves with their partner under the close supervision of black belt Judo instructors.
Our goal upon completion is that your officers can avoid injury in a sudden fall or from being knocked down, escape from an attacker either standing or on the ground, apply pain compliance techniques as necessary, and safely take a suspect into custody.
Class Format
We conduct a one-hour classroom discussion followed by three hours of hands-on training on your premises. Participants should wear comfortable clothes for athletic movement, such as normal boots, BDU pants or sweats, and a t-shirt. Although the techniques we cover are fully compatible with a duty belt, we will not wear belts in class to avoid wear and tear on the mats. All weapons should be secured away from the training area.
This course has been approved by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Program (POST) and will contribute four hours towards each participant’s annual Continuing Law Enforcement Education (CLEE) training requirements.
"As a Chief of Police, and 44-year law enforcement veteran, I recognize the vital importance of officer training. Especially that of hands-on self defense training which is critical for officer survival on the street. That type of training had just recently been provided to the officers of this police department by your company, Tactical Judo Solutions.
A couple of weeks ago 2 of our officers were conducting a traffic stop on the shoulder of a divided highway. A motorist veered partially onto that shoulder narrowly missing one of the officers who then proceeded to stop that vehicle. A second unit arrived as a backup. After a brief investigation, the officers informed the driver that they were placing him under arrest at which time the driver raised his arms to avoid being handcuffed. Using wrist control techniques, they tried bringing his arms down to be cuffed. The subject kept trying to reach into one of his pockets while continuing to resist the officers. The officers then used a leg sweep technique to safely put the subject on the ground where, with the use of wrist locks, they were able to finally handcuff the subject. It was determined that the subject had a pistol in the pocket he was reaching for. The techniques the officers used that night were learned in the training your company had recently taught them.
I firmly believe that those techniques kept our officers from being critically injured or killed that night. Thank you for your commitment to keeping police officers safe in this crazy world."
“People close distance much faster than you can go to tools in some cases, and I believe the training I received from Tactical Judo Solutions becoming second nature is what allowed me to go home at the end of my shift!
One instance, I used Osotogari (redirection) on a Domestic call late at night when a subject became combative and decided he wasn’t interested in dealing with the police and grabbed ahold of my outer vest. I already knew based on how I was grabbed what to do, I stuck to what I was taught first (break balance) I stepped and swept the leg. The subject was taken into custody with no injuries to the subject nor officers.
I used Ogoshi (hip redirection) one morning when I observed a subject I knew to have several warrants run into a house. Upon clearing the house, the subject decided he wasn’t going to jail. The subject charged me wielding a screwdriver in his hand, before I could even think of tools the subject was in my face. I grabbed his wrist knowing his weapon of choice was not going to be effective on me if I held his wrist. At that time, I used the subject’s momentum against him by stepping, mirroring his feet with mine and sitting my hips, the subject's momentum did the rest and all I had to do was hold onto his wrist. After the throw bought me time, the subject dropped the screwdriver and was taken into custody without injury.”
“While working special detail at an event, a recruit who has been taught from Tactical Judo Solutions, assisted in an arrest of a suspect. The recruit was able to use a leg lock, which made the subject comply with little effort and no injuries, but major effect.”
“A course that covers a subject which I haven’t received any additional training since the academy over 17 years ago. This class conducted exercises which put an emphasis not only on officer safety but subduing suspects with simple and easy to understand techniques.”

“Tactical Judo Solutions provided awesome real-world training to our department. No one wants to be a part of a violent physical encounter but, thanks to this training, we were provided the tools and knowledge to survive these encounters. The instructors were knowledgeable and did an awesome job working with us as we worked through the techniques. The training is a must for Law Enforcement!”

“I really enjoyed the class. As someone who has little practical experience in ground fighting, I felt the class better prepared me and provided a sense of confidence. The basics of the class lay a good foundation to build on and can even be practiced alone or with a partner. I would recommend this class for everyone.”
